All tracks are stereo, except tracks A8, A9, C3, D2 mono
Track notes:
A1 - Remixed true stereo version from Never Before.
A2, A3, A5, C4, C6, D3, D5, D6, E7 to E9, F3, F5, F7, F8, G1, G4, G7 to G10 - Remastered from the original Hollywood two-track stereo mixdown tape.
A4 - Although this track was first recorded by Jim Dickson as an acoustic demo, this superior second version, using the electric 12-string for the instrumental hook, was recorded during the Mr. Tambourine Man Lp sessions, but remained unreleased until its appearance on Never Before.
A6, A7 - Remastered from the original Hollywood two-track stereo tape.
A8 - Intended at one time to become the Byrd's third single release for Columbia, "Baby Blue" was withdrawn at the last minute in favor of a more promising new recording, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" The track remained unreleased until its inclusion on Never Before.
A9 - Previously unreleased alternate version. This track, intended for the B-side of the shelved "Baby Blue" 45, was re-recorded two months later and became the flip side of "Turn! Turn! Turn!" This previously unreleased first version includes a different vocal mix, with Gene Clark in the forefront, a slightly different lead guitar line, and a previously unheard harmonica solo simultaneous with Roger's guitar break.
A10 - Words from the Book of Ecclesiastes. Remastered from the original two-track tape, this cut was never mixed for true stereo release. With the multi-tracks nowhere to be found for our use, this is the next best thing, with the vocals panned slightly to the left, instruments to the right. This version offers definition never before heard, and we allowed the track to run a bit longer than all other released versions.
A11, A12 - Remixed from the original three-track master tape.
B1 - Remixed from the original two-track master, as with "Turn! Turn! Turn!"
B2 - Remixed from the original eight-track master, this cut includes a bongo track which was used in the earliest mixes, but deleted on the released version.
B3 - "The Day Walk" was the original working title of the track later renamed "Never Before" by Gene Clark for the Murray Hill release. This version is from the original eight-track master and is presented here for the first time ever in beautiful wide stereo.
B4, B5, B10, C1, C2, C7, C9 to C11 - Remixed from the original eight-track master.
B6 - Remixed from the original eight-track master for its inclusion here in wide true stereo, "Rider" was an out-take from the 5D Lp sessions.
B7 - Remastered from the original Hollywood two-track stereo mixdown.
B8 - Remixed true stereo version from Never Before.
B9 - Remixed from the original eight-track master, this version, actually in demo form, contains the full guitar intro which was deleted from the Never Before release. It is also presented here for the first time in wide stereo.
B11 - Remixed from the original eight-track master, with count-off and cold ending.
C3 - Remastered from tape of the original Swedish radio broadcast, this Chuck Berry tune was a staple of live Byrds' shows circa '65-'68 and has never been part of an authorized collection until its appearance here.
C5 - Remixed from the original eight-track master, with long ending.
C8 - Remixed from the original eight-track master, this track is presented here for the first time in beautiful wide stereo.
C12 - This cut, surviving from the Notorious sessions, was the last Byrds' recording made with David Crosby's involvement before his departure from the original group.
D1 - Plus unknown brass. Remixed from the original eight-track master, this is "Lady Friend"'s first appearance in wide true stereo with no additional overdubs.
D2 - Remastered from the original mono mixdown tape, this is the early mix released on 7" only. The version contained on the Notorious Lp was a later mix with added phasing effects.
D4, E10 - Remastered from the original Hollywood two-track mixdown tape.
D7 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original eight-track master, this long-lost gem was an out-take from the Sweetheart sessions, and features Gram Parsons on guitar and vocals.
D8, D10, D11, E1, E2 - Remastered from the original Nashville two-track stereo mixdown tape.
D9 - Previously unreleased version. Remixed from the original eight-track master, "The Christian Life" features a legendary unreleased vocal track from Gram Parsons recorded at the Nashville Sweetheart sessions. The released version of this tune featured Roger McGuinn on lead vocals, mimicking Gram's singing style.
D12 - Previously unreleased version. Remixed from the original eight-track master, "You Don't Miss Your Water" features another "lost" Gram Parsons lead vocal.
E3 - Previously unreleased version. Remixed from the original eight-track master, "One Hundred Years" features a lost Gram Parsons lead vocal. On this version, the background harmonies had not yet been added.
E4 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original eight-track master, this cut was an out-take from the Sweetheart sessions and features a double-tracked vocal from Roger McGuinn.
E5 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original eight-track master, "Lazy Days" is an incredible out-take from the Sweetheart sessions, featuring Gram Parsons on lead vocals. Gram later re-recorded this tune with the Flying Burrito Brothers for inclusion on their Burrito Deluxe Lp.
E6 - Remixed from the original 16-track master.
F1 - Previously unreleased version. Remixed in June 1990, from the original 16-track master, under Roger McGuinn's supervision. McGuinn: "The female choir [present on the released 45 mix] was basically added without our knowledge." The female vocal overdubs have been deleted from this new version.
F2 - Previously unreleased. Remastered from the original two-track stereo mixdown and a surprise even to Roger McGuinn, "Mae Jean" is a fabulous out-take from the Easy Rider Lp sessions.
F4 - Previously unreleased version. Remastered from the original two-track stereo mixdown tape, this beautiful unissued version of "Oil" is much more upbeat and vocally-countrified than its heavier counterpart which was released on the Easy Rider Lp.
F6 - Previously unreleased. A forgotten out-take from the Easy Rider sessions, "Way Beyond The Sun" features some great laid-back picking from the late Clarence White. Remastered from the original two-track mixdown tape.
F9 - Previously unreleased version. Remixed from the original eight-track master, this soulful version of "Lover" was recorded at Queens College in New York.
F10, F11 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original eight-track master, recorded at Queens College, New York.
F12 - Remastered from the original New York two-track stereo mixdown. Recorded at the Felt Forum, New York.
G2 - Remastered from the original two-track stereo tape, this is an earlier, alternate mix than the released version.
G3 - Previously unreleased version. Although originally recorded during the Untitled sessions, "Kathleen's Song" was held in the can until the release of Byrdmaniax the next year, where it appeared as a somewhat cluttered, orchestrated cut, due to several layers of overdubs added without the Byrds' knowledge or consent. We present it here for the first time in its original unaltered mix.
G5 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original 16-track master, "Woman" is an incompleted out-take from the Untitled sessions.
G6 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original 16-track master, "Stanley's Song" is an out-take from the Dr. Byrds sessions.
G11 to H3 - Remastered from the original two-track stereo mixdown tape.
H4 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original 16-track master, "White's Lightning" was part of a studio jam recorded during the Untitled sessions. The recording was logged in the CBS files under the title "Fifteen Minute Jam".
H5 - Words from the Book of Ecclesiastes. Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original master, recorded at the "Roy Orbison Tribute" show.
H6 - Previously unreleased. Remixed from the original master, recorded at the "Roy Orbison Tribute" show.
H7 to H10 - Previously unreleased new Byrds recording. Recorded at Treasure Isle Recorders, Nashville, Tennessee. Recorded on Sony 3348-48 Track Digital
