Horror Movie Marathon - Discount Death Mask
The album sets the tone immediately with “Grandpa’s Shotgun,” where Will traces the steps of his paternal bloodline back to a watershed moment in his family’s history. Before taking his own life, Rutledge’s great-grandfather took the time to stowe dozens of mean-spirited, handwritten notes in coat pockets, books, and drawers for his family to find in the years following his death. Massaging this history into a lush arrangement for a 12-piece orchestra, flute, guitar, and keys, Horror Movie Marathon weaves together a safety net for vulnerability and processing generational trauma. Thus, "Grandpa's Shotgun" became a spiritual north star for the record, overruling resentment by celebrating the macabre with tenderness and humility.
The songs on Discount Death Mask paint a colorful swath of human emotion, but what solidifies their staying power is the synergistic magic produced by Will’s stripped-down guitar parts and Dash’s tender-yet-confident performance on the keys. The instrumentation presents as its own fraught family dynamic, while Rutledge and Flach’s vocal harmonies melt into one another with a palpable sense of trust, love, and understanding. The atmosphere of the records runs the gamut between speedy, tongue-in-cheek punk songs ("NYC Traffic" & "Crying & Laughing"), bluesy piano rags ("Did It Do Anything At All" & "Conners Color TV") and hauntingly tender ballads ("Living Hard" & "Town Car Death Drive").Â
